Bring an ESP32-CAM online

Build a camera prototype you can open from another device on your local network.

2–4 practice sessions ยท suggested effort

What you'll make

A working local camera page, plus a repeatable setup checklist.

01

Identify the hardware

Record the exact board model and camera sensor. Check the vendor's power and programming instructions. Disconnect power before changing wiring; pin mappings vary between boards.

Checkpoint: Your parts list includes the board variant and programming interface.

02

Open the official example

Install Espressif's Arduino ESP32 support using its official instructions. Open CameraWebServer. Select the camera model in the example's board_config.h, using the version installed on your computer.

Checkpoint: The selected camera configuration matches your physical board.

03

Configure and flash

Enter your Wi-Fi credentials locally, keeping them out of screenshots and shared source. Select the correct board and port. Follow the board-specific procedure to enter programming mode, upload, and return to normal boot.

Checkpoint: The example compiles and uploads successfully.

04

Inspect serial output

Open the serial monitor at 115200 baud, as used by the official example. Reset the board. Check for successful camera initialization, Wi-Fi connection, and the reported address.

Checkpoint: Record the local address and investigate initialization errors before opening the browser.

05

View and verify

Open the reported address from a device on the same local network. Test a still image and a short stream. If unstable, check power, camera ribbon connection, Wi-Fi signal, and image settings. Keep this example on your local network; it is not a ready-made public camera service.

Checkpoint: Repeat the test after a power cycle and document what worked.
